mary sampson: artist

photographer and ceramic artist

Since graduating from The University College for the Creative Arts in 1997, my work has embraced both photography and sculpture. I have concentrated on the classical art of black and white photographic imaging, printing my work using traditional darkroom methods. I also use old cameras and explore early photographic processes such as Cyanotype and Vandyke printing, on paper, cloth and ceramics. My Ceramic work is hand built with the emphasis on form and texture, inspired by natural forms and the landscape. I use a variety of clays and, with found objects, mark, texture and carve the work to achieve organic and sculptural forms. Raku firing gives each piece a unique finish, and the process adds extra excitement for me as the artist. My garden ceramics are made in Stoneware and fired to be frost resistant.
